Southwest Bonus Points For New Rapid Rewards Members

I’m guessing that this post won’t apply to too many of you, but it would be a decent deal for anyone who doesn’t already have a Southwest Rapid Rewards account.

Rapid Rewards 2,500 Point Sign Up Bonus

  1. Use this link to enroll now. You get started with 250 bonus points for joining.
  2. Then, sign up to receive e-mail communications, and you’ll get another 500 bonus points when you stay subscribed for three months.
  3. Complete a roundtrip flight between May 20, 2013 and July 20, 2013, and you will get an additional 2,500 bonus points.

How valuable are the points?

There aren’t enough points here to justify taking a flight, but if you’ve already got a trip planned, this would be an extra little bonus.  By doing each of the three steps above, you’ll get 3,250 points.  Used towards Wanna Get Away fares, that is $54.28 worth of flights.

You also need to remember that Southwest does not charge for checked bags.

If you were thinking about doing this, there’s one more thing you can do to maximize your points even more.

If you have an Ink Bold or Ink Plus credit card, you can buy Southwest gift cards at an office supply store like Office Max and get 5 points per dollar spent. Let’s say you were going to buy a flight that cost $250 round trip and you bought Southwest gift cards at Office Max, you’d earn an additional 1,250 Ultimate Rewards points for a total of 4,500 points combined Southwest points (if you transfered Ultimate Rewards points to Southwest).  That’s a $75.15 value or an equivalent 30% discount off your flight.

All in all, it’s not huge news, but a decent opportunity for someone who’s not yet a Rapid Rewards member who might be flying Southwest this summer.
