Excellent Benefits of the Card

Redeem award flights for 5,000 fewer miles.

This is an amazing credit card perk.  I actually confirmed a few weeks ago that this is for any tickets booked from the Dividend Miles account associated with the credit card.

Check out this awesomeness.

As you may know, US Airways has some great off-peak flights to Europe.  The timeframe is really short (Jan. 15- Feb. 28).  However, you can’t beat the rates – 35,000 miles roundtrip in economy and 60,000 miles round trip in business class.  As a US Airways Premier World MasterCard holder, you’d be able to snag those flights for a mere 30,000 in economy and 55,000 miles in business class.

A couple of weeks ago, I found flights from Denver to Madrid, Spain for my whole family.  The trip would have cost the five of us 150,000 US Airways Dividend miles.  My wife wasn’t quite ready to take a trip in February as we’ve already got a lot of winter and spring 2013 travel planned.

Either way, I’m pretty excited to know that having the card can save my family 25,000 (5,000 *5) miles on any flights we take using Dividend Miles.  We’re thinking about aiming for a 2014 family trip to Europe using Dividend Miles or AAdvantage miles, depending on how we’ll work in our Christmas plans.

Two companion tickets every year

If you purchase a roundtrip ticket of $250 or more with your US Airways credit card, you can have up to two companions fly with you for $99.

Travel must be for a roundtrip, coach-class, within the contiguous 48 United States or from one of the 48 states to Canada.  A 14 day advanced purchase is required.  Minimum 2 day stay and maximum 30 day.  There are also blackout dates where the certificates are not valid. I count 27 days in 2012 that are blacked out and the same number of days in 2013.

The certificate does have an experation date.  Best I can tell, you’ll need to book 9 months after you apply for the card.  Travel must usually be completed about 12 months after you apply for the card.

The Other US Airways Card: US Airways Dividend Miles Premier World MasterCard

There is another credit card that specifically states, “Offer available to Dividend Miles members currently with Chairman’s Preferred Status only”.  That card has all the same benefits plus one extra benefit – every year you are a card member you get a bonus 10,000 Dividend miles.  That justifies the $89 annual fee.  You can click on the application page, but I just don’t know if the 10,000 mile annual benefit will apply if you don’t have Chairman’s Status.  Either way, you can check out that offer here.

If you don’t plan to keep the card for over a year, I’d just stick with the standard US Airways credit card offer for 30,000 Dividend Miles.

Why I Think the US Airways Offer is a Good Offer

While most credit cards are moving towards higher minimum spends, this card remains one of the few frequent flyer cards that offers the bonus after your first purchase. It might not be the biggest sign up bonus available, but it’s from Barclays so I’m guessing it’s been awhile since you applied for a Barclays card, and you only need to make one purchase to get the 30,000 points.

A couple of disclaimers regarding US Airways:

  • They don’t allow one way award booking.
  • They charge an award processing fee (no way to avoid this even when booking online) $25 continental U.S./Alaska/Canada, $35 Latin America/Caribbean, $50 Hawaii/Europe/Middle East/South America/all other destinations.
  • Their online booking award search only searches US Airways flights.  You can ask them to waive the $40 telephone booking fee.  Your results may vary.

If you’ve been signing up for credit cards for points and miles, you’ve probably got a bunch of American Express and Chase applications.  However, Barclays rarely has much to get excited about.  This is a good offer that I’d take advantage of while it lasts.

Any idea if you can apply for this one and get the award if you’ve done it before (about 9 months ago)? I haven’t cancelled the one I did originally yet.

I’ve heard that it is possible to do, but I don’t have any person experience with it. If you try you could come back and leave a comment about your experience.

My mother has 52,000 American Express Membership Rewards points and will only fly on United (don;t ask me why; she’s 87 years old); how do I transfer those points into her Mileage Plus account or does the MR program have a Star Alliance partner I can book a United flight using their miles? Thanks
