Today I’ll be discussing the The Platinum Card ® from American Express, a prized possession in the wallet of any frequent traveler. Yet, on the other hand, it is a thorn in the flesh of we budget travelers who love the features, yet wonder if it is worth justifying the $450 annual fee.
I had a few people mention they were nervous about or even going to skip out on the British Airways 100,000 bonus miles credit card because of the $95 annual fee. If you’re one of those who emailed, go to a hospital right now because the idea of a $450 annual fee would sound preposterous.
Still, my wife and I have had several discussions trying to decide if the benefits justify the expense.
The Platinum Card ® from American Express Travel Benefits
25,000 American Express Rewards Bonus Sign up Points (after spending $2,000 in the first three months of Card membership)
American Express Membership Rewards points can be transferred to many airlines at a 1:1 ratio. You can also transfer them to hotels. Also, they frequently offer bonuses where you can get even more out of a transfer.
$200 Worth of Airline Fees Credit with the The Platinum Card ® from American Express
- If you pay for baggage on a flight, the American Express will refund up to $200 of those fees.
- If you buy food or entertainment on a flight then this card will cover those expenses up to $200.
- If you have cancellation or changes fees, you’ve got your first $200 covered.
- If you want to buy a premium membership with an airline, you’ve got your first $200 to be paid by American Express.
- I’ve even heard that you can use it to buy $50 airline gift cards.
As a note, you do need to designate your airline, and the full amount must be used for that airline. (I.e. if you designate American Airlines, you can get up to $200 in airline incidental fees reimbursed. However, you could not get $100 for American and $100 for Delta.)
The Platinum Card ® from American Express Airport Lounge Access
As an The Platinum Card ® from American Express card holder, you can get free access to several airline lounges including:
- American Airlines Admirals Clubs
- Delta Sky Clubs
- US Airways Clubs
With the exception of the US Airways Clubs, you will need to present your card, government issued ID, and a valid ticket for same-day travel to gain access to the club. For the US Airways Clubs you don’t need a same-day travel ticket. This is good news for those of us who might want to fly Southwest and also get lounge access.
For families, the benefit is nice because your spouse and children under age 21 can join you without extra cost.
Priority Pass Select Access Free Enrollment
Priority Pass is an independent lounge network that gives you access to over 600 airport lounges in 100 countries. For international travelers, this really opens up a lot of lounge possibilities overseas. You can enter the lounge regardless of your class of travel or the airline you are flying.
Unfortunately, since this is a Select access membership, guests who enter with you must pay $27 per person per visit.
Global Entry Membership
Use this C\card to apply for the $100 Global Entry membership, and you’ll get to credit the fee. This membership will be valid for 5 years, so it’s a good idea to get it while you’re a Platinum card holder.
3 Additional The Platinum Card ® from American Express Cards Cost $175
If you have friends or family who would be interested in the card, this would be the way to go. Simply add them to your account and give them a low (think $10) spending limit. They get all the great benefits for next to nothing.
Companion Ticket with International Business Class Ticket
When you book a qualifying international Business Class ticket with Platinum Travel Services, you can get a companion ticket.
$100 Cruise Credit
Each year, you can get a statement credit of $100 when you book a qualifying cruise or vacation of $3,000 or more through American Express Travel Services.
Starwood Gold Status
The Starwood Gold Status gives you bonus earnings for every stay (50%), late checkouts, and room upgrades when available.
Premium Car Rental Program
Use your American Express Platinum credit card to get complimentary memberships to the Premium Car Rental Programs from:
- National Car Rental
With your membership, you’ll get to skip long lines and enjoy vehicle upgrades.
1 membership reward point on every dollar spent
Final Thoughts on The Platinum Card ® from American Express Credit Cad Travel Benefits
No doubt the fee is expensive. However, if you can make use of the benefits, it really is worth the expenses for at least a year. Also if you could share add card memberships between friends or family, it really could be a great deal.
I do wish that this card offered more lucrative earning opportunities for Membership Rewards points. It’s basically one point per dollar with the opportunity to earn extra when shopping online at the Bonus Points Mall (up to 4x) or booking travel with AMEX online (2x).
For my family, the jury is still out. We will do a lot of traveling in the next 18 months, but we need to be sure that the benefits far outweigh the expense.
