The old saying goes that a change is as good as a holiday but why choose one over the other when you don’t have to settle for just change and can instead choose to holiday at one of these frugal and wonderful holiday destinations?
1. Bali, Indonesia
Bali is a popular tourist destination for travellers from all over the world, and as a result you can find affordable restaurants, accommodation and activities no matter what your interests. An important plus for the frugal traveller is that a Bali holiday can be very affordable thanks to all of the free tourist attractions you can be a part of such as the stunning beaches, unique islands and exotic people and lifestyles you can enjoy simply by taking a walk outside of your hotel. Bali is also a contrast between lush countryside, tropical jungles, the vast white beaches and modern and exciting nightlife.
2. Morocco, Northern Africa
When you travel to Morocco you will get great value for money as Morocco’s currency the dirham has been devalued, so you can enjoy even more affordable Moroccan food, accommodation and attractions on your frugal but wonderful holiday to Africa. Morocco is not only famous for its delicious food, but also its art and history, with eight of its Roman and Islamic sites being named UNESCO heritage sites. The affordability and down to earth nature of Morocco is also part of its charm.
3. Mexico, North America
Mexico is another country which is very cheap for travellers and there are also plenty of free activities to enjoy. During the day you can spend your frugal Mexican holiday relaxing on the enticing beaches and enjoying the warm, clear water but as the sun sets you will be enticed into the energetic, exotic and unique party atmosphere of Mexican nightlife, most famed in the party junction of Cancun. Mexico is also home to a number of stunning coral reefs and unique and individual islands just off the coast where you can immerse yourself in old historic town features and authentic Mexican culture simply by wandering the cobblestone streets and admiring the colonial architecture on a self-guided, not to mention free, tour.
4. Ecuador, South America
Ecuador is a surprisingly affordable holiday destination where you can stay in a decent hotel for just $17 a night and get a delicious authentic local meal for around two dollars just about anywhere. Frugality will get you a long way in Ecuador as the country is inexpensive and easy to explore affordably, and from just $25 you can join guided tours of colonial style architecture, rainforests or volcanic landscapes. Of course one of the most wonderful things about choosing Ecuador as a travel destination means you are just a short trip away from the Galapagos Islands and from just $1000 you can visit the place where Charles Darwin conducted much of his research into his theories of evolution.
5. Romania, South-East Europe
There is a lot to see and do in Romania for the frugal traveller if you are interested in checking out the landscapes by going for a hike in the Carpathian Mountains. Or you may be interested in visiting mediaeval churches or monasteries in Moldavia or seeing the medieval castles of Transylvania. Accommodation in Romania is also very cheap as you can stay in a hotel or hostel from between $7 and $20.
