2011 Starwood Category Changes Announced | Take Action Before March 1

Unless you are a new reader, you should already know that I’m a huge fan of the Starwood brand.  I like them because their points system is so generous.  Here’s how you can use a credit card to get three free nights at a category two hotel.  If the program is new to you, here’s an introduction to the Starwood program.

For a quick overview, the Starwood program offers their locations at different points redemptions based on the category classification.

As an example, a category two hotel can be reserved for 4,000 points on a week day and 3,000 points on a weekend.  A category three, on the other hand, will require 7,000 points for a night.

Since Starwood just announced their upcoming category changes, you have until March 1st to make bookings at locations where the category will be increasing.

To view the changes, you can visit this post and download the locations that are changing.

In just over a year we’ll probably be back in Sydney, and I noticed that most (all?) the Starwood brands in Sydney are increasing by one category.  The Four Points Darling Harbour we stayed in this year will be going from a category 3 to a category 4.

Check your travel plans.  Check your schedule.  Make bookings in the next few days if you plan to use your Starwood points any time soon.  Of course, if the category is dropping you should wait until after March 1st, 2011 to book your location at the new (lower) category.
